Buckhorn Observatory, 2254 County Road 507, Buckhorn, Ontario, Canada K0L 1J0

705-657-2544

Buckhorn Observatory is run by John and Deb Crossen, two lucky inmates who escaped from Toronto in 1999. As you can imagine, the Hamlet of Buckhorn was quite a change!

John's life-long interest in astronomy flourished beneath the dark Kawartha night skies. Within a year of settling in an observatory was built. It wasn't long before people dropped in to ask if they could look through the telescope. Now there is a set fee of $12 for adults and $6 for children to help keep the facility going.

Over the years BHO has been involved in the Peterborough Regional Science Fair, the Holy Cross Science Show where John was a judge, and annual appearances at Astronomy Day in Peterborough. He also makes presentations to schools, seniors, scouts, professional groups and at Lang Pioneer Village. BHO will participate in the 2010 Canada-wide Science Fair with a portable planetarium show at Trent University.

Buckhorn Observatory’s outreach program has been honoured with a spotlight feature about BHO on NASA's SOHO website, a half-hour CHEX TV program and most recently, a Certificate of Appreciation from the Professional Engineers of Ontario.

John's also writes a weekly stargazing column in the Lakefield Herald and the observatory’s monthly newsletter.

Deb pitches in with website design, and editing the Newsletter. (To join our email distribution list, send your E-mail address to: johnstargazer@xplornet.com )

Deb has also found time to write a book on our adaptation to country life entitled Chick with a Chainsaw. She runs the front desk at Viamede Resort and maintains websites for a number of not-for-profit organizations and businesses in Buckhorn. Deb relaxes as a Director/Actress in the local dinner theatre.

Not bad for a couple of slicks in the sticks!
